Welcome Home

A place of faith, community, and grace in the heart of Oscoda, Michigan.

Who We Are

Oscoda United Methodist Church and Oscoda Indian Mission Church are two distinct church families, joined together as a charge to serve the people of Oscoda, Iosco county, and Alcona county, as well as efforts for good wherever we can help.

We are rooted in deepening our relationship with God, supporting and nurturing each other, and understanding our own unique faith journey. Together we are mission-focused, outreach-driven, and passionate to serve with love extended to all God's people.

Who We Are

What We Believe

What We Believe

As United Methodist congregations, we are welcoming and affirming to everyone. United Methodists believe everyone is a child of God and is included in the circle of the faith family. Today’s United Methodist Church places a high value on addressing issues of social injustice, especially reaching out to the unsheltered and those with food insecurity. We Love Boldly, Serve Joyfully, and Lead Courageously.

We offer an open communion table which means you do not need to be a member to receive communion; the only requirement is to come with a penitent heart seeking Christ’s forgiveness.

Our members are active in ministry. We have many ways to be involved, and we encourage everyone to volunteer in some capacity through the year.

Joining the Church

Those interested in becoming a member of the church participate in a class to discuss UM beliefs and to be sure United Methodism is a good fit for you. Classes are offered twice a year and are led by the pastor. If you have been a member at a different UM church, we can assist you with transferring your membership to Oscoda.

Joining The Church

Community Connections

Community Connections

We partner with many organizations and join forces with others to contribute our time, talents, and resources to accomplish more than any of us can on our own. We believe in active, participatory, hands-on work for the Lord.

Supporting the Work of the Church

God’s work is accomplished by everyone contributing in different ways. We commit to supporting the church through our: Prayers – we pray for the church, her ministries, her people, and the people we serve. Presence – we are filled and enriched by attending worship and participating in God’s work. Our presence fills us and supports others who share the worship experience with us. Service – we serve God actively by using all of our talents Witness – we share stories of God’s presence in our lives Gifts – we give a share of all of our resources; our money, time, ideas, sweat, and compassion.

Online giving for the work of Oscoda UMC or Oscoda Indian Mission is processed through Vanco. You can give a single donation or set up a recurring weekly, monthly, or quarterly contribution. To make your contribution go further, you can opt to cover the processing fees as well.

Ministries

Involvement in the church means participation in a ministry team, a mission activity, or an event, or maybe several ways to serve.

United Methodist Men

Men of the church meet monthly for breakfast and fellowship at Desi’s restaurant on the second Saturday at 9 am. Their big annual project is the fall potato drop, distributing 40,000 pounds of fresh potatoes to area food banks and to individuals in need.

United Women in Faith

Women gather monthly for mission education and fellowship. Through reading programs, awareness of social justice issues, and regular outreach projects, the UWF intentionally seek ways to deepen their relationship with God.

Mission Outreach Team

Each month, the mission outreach team identifies a worthy cause from within or outside of the church, and hosts a coffee hour to raise awareness and financial support. Through these efforts, the mission team has supported Heifer International, God’s Country Cooperative Parish, Oscoda Community Food distribution, Huron Housing Hope, Baby Pantry, Mexican Mission Trip, Youth Group Mission Trip, and many others.

Healing Hearts Grief Support

To help people as they process grief of all kinds, a monthly support group, facilitate discussion and teach strategies for understanding grief responses. Healing Hearts meets the second Friday of each month at 2 pm

Christian Education

Sunday School helps youth and young ones learn the basics of what we believe as Christians, teaches Bible stories, and practices getting along with others. Teaching Sunday School on a once a month rotation is a great way to not only share your faith but to learn more about your faith through the questions the children ask. Sunday School is available for pre-K through 6 th grade.

Students grade 7 -12 are invited to participate in confirmation class to explore faith on a deeper level with a mentor. A young adult confirmation class for 18-25 year olds is being planned.

Worship Team

The Saturday evening casual and Sunday traditional service are broadcast live on Facebook. The recordings are also loaded to our facebook page. The technology team manages the camera system, sound board, and projection system in the sanctuary. If you like technology, this is the team for you.

Each worship service is supported by Ushers and Greeters who offer a welcoming presence for members and visitors and help people with whatever supports they need for an enriched worship experience. Others may serve communion, offer readings, light altar candles, arrange flowers, or assist with special tasks during various worship events.

Scholarship Programs

Oscoda UMC has been blessed by two generous benefactors who established scholarship funds for high school seniors and college students who are confirmed members of the congregation and who remain active in their participation in church either locally or wherever they attend at school. The Robert and Helen Lynch Fund and the Dorothy and Bob Wells Fund have distributed well over $100,000 in scholarships.

Health and Wellness

God wants us to care for our souls and to also care for our bodies. Weekly cardio drumming classes and two levels of line dancing classes offer regular low impact movement. The Wacky Walker group meets three times a week to walk around the building during the winter and along the beach during the pleasant summer months.

Youth Group / Mission Trip

Middle and High school youth gather twice a month for snacks, lessons, life discussions, and fun activities. Every summer, youth travel to another state on a mission experience through the YouthWorks program. They may help with community projects, Vacation Bible School, cleanup, or other needed work. The trips help form understanding of other cultures, other geographic areas, and different needs of people.

Sunday’s traditional style service features an excellent choir, guest solo musicians such as flute and violin. Come join the choir on Wednesday evenings.

Helps Team

A special group of volunteers offer their handy talents to help people with yard cleanup, small tasks around the house, and a few bigger projects. The helps team is always ready to lend a hand and always welcomes additional hands for helping.

Memorial Garden

Image Placeholder

A holy focal point of the OUMC building is the memorial garden, constructed in an open air atrium in the heart of the building. Lovingly tended by a team of dedicated garden enthusiasts, the memorial garden is the resting place for more than 40 persons who have walked on from this earth. The garden features a beautiful waterfall, teak benches, stunning plantings and is home to a multi-generational family of Fowler toads to reside there year round.

Missions

Reaching out to our community and beyond with the love and compassion of Christ.

Food Pantry

To provide direct assistance to those experiencing food insecurity, OUMC offers two food support programs. An outdoor pantry box holds staple foods and emergency supplies and is accessible 24/7. Inside, an expanded pantry is open M-W-F for two hours each day so people can get a wider range of food items, including frozen meat, fresh vegetables, personal care items, coats, and a number of miscellaneous supplies. This is an excellent way to serve God’s people – greeting pantry patrons, helping them select food, and offering a supportive and listening ear. Pantry Manager Pat Gooch coordinates the pantry activities.

The pantry provides food to feed up to 200 people each week. The pantry receives food donations from the community, Oscoda Indian Mission, and church members.

Loaves and Fishes

Loaves and Fishes

December through early April, Loaves and Fishes volunteers prepare hot soup and sandwiches on Monday and Thursday for anyone who is in need of food or fellowship. Kitchen helpers may be chopping vegetables, baking cookies, or washing dishes, but it’s always a lively group dedicated to serving. Loaves and Fishes serves between 100 and 150 meals each week. Kay Gaines is the Loaves and Fishes coordinator as well as the kitchen Safeserv certified manager.

Huron Housing Hope

When the only emergency shelter in the county closed in 2023, OUMC gathered interested community members together to address the issue. Huron Housing Hope grew out of this and is now developing a piece of property across from Wurtsmith Air Force Base to construct micro homes and tiny homes to help the nearly 400 people who are unsheltered in Iosco County.

Shower Ministry

Shower Ministry

The two larger restrooms on the lower level of the OUMC building include newly renovated showers which allows people who are unsheltered the luxury of taking a shower. We provide clean towels, soap, shampoo, and privacy so a person can clean up and rejuvenate. A support volunteer assures the shower is clean and ready for the next guest.

Potato Drop

An annual fall project of United Methodist Men, in cooperation with the Society for St. Andrews, the potato drop receives a semi truck load of potatoes gleaned from fields and then distributes them to area food banks and individuals. In 2025, the project distributed 42,000 pounds of potatoes in two days.

Caring and Sharing

A team of compassionate people meet monthly to pray about concerns for members of the church families, to send greeting cards, and to deliver communion to people at home. If you like to visit with people, this is a great way to connect.

Baby Pantry

Several years ago, the women of OUMC and OIM responded to a need to help young families with clothes and supplies for infants and toddlers. The baby pantry is now a community ministry located in a permanent facility in downtown Oscoda, and is regularly supported by the United Women in Faith. Members of the church volunteer in the pantry which is open twice a month and by appointment.

Christmas Angel Tree

Image Placeholder

During the Christmas holidays, the churches work with the Oscoda Public Schools to receive and fill gift requests for children from families in need. Volunteer angels take a wish list from the tree and purchase and wrap presents which families pick up and give to their kids. The program was started as a cooperative effort with members of the church who formed the Christian Women in Action and gathered other community partners. The program serves up to 100 children each year.

Mission Trips for Adults

While youth go on their own summer mission trip, adults have been traveling to Rio Bravo Mexico to build block homes in an impoverished area. Usually a home can be constructed in a week, vastly improving the quality of life for families. It’s a big way to expand horizons and help others in amazing ways.

Events

Come together — in worship, service, and celebration throughout the year.

Worship at the Beach and Community Potluck

On Saturday of Labor Day weekend, Oscoda UMC and Oscoda Indian Mission Church meet at the Oscoda Beach Park Pavilion for an evening of worship and welcome. A huge potluck table invites everyone at the beach to join us for a meal and our Peace Tones Praise Band provides an easy listening concert before leading all gathered for worship. With Lake Huron as the backdrop, God is glorified, hearts are lifted, and caring love is extended to the community.

The Saturday before Thanksgiving, the fellowship hall becomes the best place for a complete turkey dinner, offered as a love gift to the community. The dinner has been offered since 2000 – continuing as a take-out option during covid. Around 300 people gather at the table to join in the feast.

Summer and Winter Parades

Oscoda has a 4th of July parade and a Christmas parade. Oscoda UMC participates in both parades with a float and a team of walkers who distribute sweet treats, printed messages about activities at the church, and invitations to Vacation Bible School and Christmas worship events. The float always brings a positive message about Christ’s love for all.

Holy Spokes Bike Tour

Holy Spokes Bike Tour

The Holy Spokes Bike Tour is the one fundraising event sponsored each year by our Youth Group to support the summer student mission trip. On the Saturday before Memorial Day riders can participate in short, medium or long distance rides starting from the church and following bike trails in the beautiful Huron National Forest. Sponsorships and entry fees generate funds to support students as they travel to other parts of the country for a week of hands on mission work, experiencing helping others, daily devotions, and spiritual enrichment.

Memorial Day Service of Remembrance at Indian Cemetery

The Oscoda Indian Mission Church, the sister church to Oscoda UMC, cares for the ancestors resting at a historic Native American cemetery. Each year on Memorial Day, a service of remembrance is held at the cemetery with traditions offered by the elders of the church. Community members come to hear the stories and honor the people who first lived on these lands.

Worship

Gathering in spirit and truth to praise, learn, and grow together in faith.

Three Worship Opportunities

The Oscoda UMC and Oscoda Indian Mission charge provides three different styles and times of worship.

Saturday Evening Casual – Our talented praise worship band The PeaceTones leads the music filled service Saturday at 6 p.m. The style is relaxed, the music is contemporary with guitars, drums, and keyboard, the message is Spirit filled. Communion is shared monthly – The United Methodist Church has an open communion table which means everyone is welcome. Come as you are.

Sunday Morning Traditional – For those who are comfortable with a bit more formal structure, the Sunday Traditional service offers rich liturgy, organ and piano, choir anthems, and a mix of traditional and some contemporary hymns. The Bible based message offers nuggets for life, scripture interpretation and ways to live out our faith. Children are invited to participate in a message with the pastor and then can leave for a separate Sunday School time. Even though the service is more structured, you will still find a joyous and inviting atmosphere to praise the Lord, be filled with the Spirit, and celebrate life. Communion is shared monthly – The United Methodist Church has an open communion table which means everyone is welcome.

Oscoda Indian Mission Church – In the 1850s, the Chippewa settlement in the Mikado area began meeting together in Christian community. They would form the first Christian church in Iosco county which became part of the Methodist denomination in the 1870s, The building which was constructed in 1878 is still used today as native and non-native persons gather to worship on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The service includes hymns, prayers, and a relaxed pace. You’ll even have the opportunity to sing the doxology in native Chippewa language. As with other services, the communion table is open to all.

What to Expect When You Come to Worship

Image Placeholder

Parking is available in our connected lot or on the street. Enter the building by the bell tower on Dwight Street or through the fellowship hall entrance at the parking lot. In the Sanctuary, you’ll see smiling faces and receive welcome greetings at every service. We’ll ask you to sign in that you attended – if you want to provide an address or email, that’s fine. We promise not to bug you. The services include screens which display words to responses and hymns or praise songs. Hymnals are available too if you like to follow the notes.

There’s a room at the back of the sanctuary if you have a fussy baby or active toddler and would feel more comfortable there.

We invite participation in worship, but it’s always your choice. We want you to experience God and relationship with the Lord in many ways. It is always our prayer that everyone who attends worship will leave feeling uplifted, and encouraged to walk a deeper faith journey.

Sunday School for Kids and Adults

Children age 5-12 participate in Sunday School during the traditional worship service. They start in worship for the first few minutes and after a children’s time with the pastor, they leave with Sunday School teachers for a class which lasts for the rest of the service time. Children learn basic Bible lessons, make crafts, and sometimes share a snack. At Christmas, the children always present a story of the nativity to help us remember the birth of Christ. Children come up together on communion Sundays to receive communion as a reminder of how much Jesus loves them. We are always looking for volunteers to help with Sunday School.

The adult Sunday School class meets from 9-10 a.m. The group decides what they would like to study – sometimes it’s a book, sometimes a video series, sometimes a book of the Bible. Topics rotate every two or three months, but the discussion flows easily, so it’s always a good time to start coming for a bit of extra faith development.
